Sue stood in a dark corner of the station platform, looking away as three men wearing Welsh rugby attire slowly approached her. All three were boisterous, loud, and very obviously worse for drink. The tallest of the three, a slim, reasonably good looking young man with short-cropped dark hair, took the lead, stopping immediately in front of her at touching distance. He stank of cigarettes and alcohol.

‘Don’t I know you?’

Sue recognised two of the three from her home town. Carmarthen had a relatively small population. If you didn’t know someone personally, it was likely you’d seen them around, in the streets, the shops, the pubs and cafés, somewhere. Two of the young men were in that category. The other was a stranger. She turned away, doing her best to ignore the man standing just inches away.

‘What the fuck’s wrong with you, you stuck-up bitch? I’m only trying to be friendly. You’re not all that. Who the fuck do you think you are?’

Sue reached into her bag, clutching the knife, but not showing it. ‘I don’t know who you think I am, but you’re wrong. I’ve never seen any of you in my life. I’m standing here trying to mind my own business. I want you to go away and leave me alone.’

He reached out, pulling her coat open. ‘Who are you trying to kid? I’d recognise those tits anywhere.’

Sue increased her grip on the knife’s handle, picturing herself plunging the blade into his gut and twisting. ‘Touch me again, and I’m going to scream for help. My boyfriend’s a police officer. You’ll be locked up if you’re not careful. Sexual assault is a very serious offence.’

‘Sexual assault? I only looked at your tits, you stupid bitch. I didn’t touch you! You’re fucking demented.’

She was about to lash out when another of the three young men pulled her antagonist away. ‘Leave her alone, Andy. She’s not worth it. She’s not who you thought she was.’

The brown-haired young man shouted out as they walked away. ‘She’s a stuck-up fucking bitch, that’s who she is.’

Sue silently swore revenge as the man she now thought of as Mr Brown walked away with his companions one drunken step at a time. Her mind was racing, faster and faster, one thought after another tumbling in her mind. She’d find out who he was, develop an online relationship, meet him, and then sink in her claws. Just as she had with Garvey. And just when Mr B least expected it. She pictured herself slashing his throat right down to the bone, and felt a little better almost immediately as a surge of adrenalin flooded her bloodstream. A part of her wanted to follow him now. To get him alone. To rip him to pieces. But she somehow resisted the temptation despite its almost overwhelming allure. Now was not the time. The risks were too high. Getting caught was never a part of her plan.

Sue watched as the three men staggered onto the train she’d initially intended to catch before this change of plan.
